the spontaneous development of the written word coming from his hands. Asking about letters, spelling, numbers, time and dates.
Looking at a word I've written as a reference and copying it legibly the first time. His smile of satisfaction, his sense of pride and accomplishment.
How this all just arrived without any prompting, coercion or specific training, it just emerged.
It was just time for him to write. Amazing.

I want to remember...
Kyan's art has blossomed into something more concrete to him. This month he started drawing people and this is our first family portrait.
Kyan upper right corner, Mama bottom right corner, Dada lower left, Elliott very faintly drawn beside Dada
In terms of painting he is still loving orange of course
Cutting out shapes and gluing them is a new passion
(a new pass-time for Mama is picking up tiny paper bits off the floor)
And make no mistake. Both Dada and Mama asked if the orange orb in the upper left of this one was the sun and we were both promptly told: "That's a circle!" Of course.

all about orange
My eldest son is quite the guy for opinions and preferences. ( I don't know where he gets that from...) Only being 3 years old is no barrier to his taste in colour. Red was his first love and it lasted quite a long time. We had a red potty, red toys, red flowers were popular and of course red trains were the best. Next there was a brief flirtation with blue and some fondness for "lellow" which remains popular. But these days at our house it's all about orange.
Orange paint, crayons and paper are requested.
An orange rose was the inspiration to get mama flowers
And this shirt is what he'd like to be wearing every day. Cups, plates, pj's the orange ones are most popular.
I want to remember the love of something as simple as a colour. Despite the fact that it can often make my life slightly more difficult.

I want to remember...
Our moving date is fast approaching and there are more obstacles popping up here and there in our home. Despite the chaotic nature of packing, and relocating three people there are some moments that take me aback when I realize how big Ky is getting.
He loves to read to himself. At this point he has memorized many of his favorite stories and it is a pleasure to listen to him read. Of course lately he's found hiding in boxes to be a fun new pass time.
Building train tracks with Dada is still not getting old. He loves to lay down on the floor and really get into playing. He also has the trains talk to each other and he acts out fun little scenarios (very like his Mama used to be in that regard)
And he is now tall enough to reach light switches. He loves to be able to do the simple, everyday tasks of living. So far we've been working on him taking off his own shoes and hat and putting them away. It is mind blowing that he is closer to 3 than 2 now.

I want to remember...
The time that I was so looking forward to is in full bloom. Ever since Kyan started walking I've been waiting for the time when he'd pick up rocks, sticks, pine cones and such and carry them around with him. I was a collector as a child and stones were my favorite. Often I would fill my pockets and hands to the brim and play with them for what seemed like hours.
Now that this time is here for Ky I just want to remember it. I wanted to record it here so that I remember his exclaims of delight at seeing pine cones! How he tries to pick up huge parts of fallen tree branches, the expression on his face as he contemplates which object he must relinquish in order to pick up another and how glorious his little hands are as they reach for nature's toys.
To store some of these treasures in one place I've created a little shelf for his outside toys. It used to be a shoe rack so it's nothing fancy but it's functional. On top I've placed a wooden salad bowl and a few other little pots to hold the rocks, sticks, feathers and such. It is his own nature altar for all of the things he holds dear at this moment (and some that I like too.) He usually goes to it as soon as he's out the door and chooses which things to carry with him. This stage is so interesting as if he must hold at least one thing in his hands at all times. I will keep this little habit of his as one of my most precious memories of this summer.
